Understanding Yourself: A Journey to Presence, Awareness, and Compassion
Day 27 of 50 last days of being 50: 2/2/2025
For forty years, I stumbled through life in reaction mode. Like many of us, I searched for meaning, acceptance, and belonging in the world around me, letting external circumstances dictate my responses and shape my identity. Then something shifted.
As I enter my 51st year, I've discovered a profound truth: to be fully present and kind to the world, we must first understand ourselves. This revelation isn't just another life lesson—it's an invitation to wholeness, combining hard-earned wisdom with a fresh start.
The Path to Self-Awareness
My journey has taught me that true self-understanding requires attention to three key areas:
**Body Awareness**: Tuning into physical sensations and what our body is telling us
**Emotional Awareness**: Recognizing and honoring our feelings without judgment
**Mental Awareness**: Observing our thoughts and the stories we tell ourselves
One of my deepest vulnerabilities emerges when I feel shamed by others—those moments when some part of my being feels unworthy. This represents what many would call a core wound, a particularly tender area of my psyche. While we often speak of core values, I believe we also carry core wounds, and mine manifests as the deep-seated fear that I am fundamentally a bad person. Though this wound runs deep, I continuously work to bring light, acceptance, and love to it.
I'm learning to recognize that these feelings of shame, though powerful, are my own internal experience rather than something others can impose upon me. This understanding has become part of my healing journey—acknowledging that I am inherently worthy, that mistakes are part of being human, and that our choices sometimes affect others. When this happens, I'm learning to recognize my role, take appropriate responsibility, and then practice letting go of what isn't mine to carry.
My Current Commitments
Today, I'm deeply committed to:
- Slowing down deliberately
- Acting with intention in everything I do
- Following my heart's truth
- Making choices that serve both myself and the world around me
The beauty of this journey is that it's continuous. Each day brings new insights, challenges, and opportunities for growth. Self-awareness isn't a destination—it's a practice, one that helps us stand in our power while remaining deeply compassionate.
An Invitation to Reflect
What does your journey of self-discovery look like?
Where are you on your path to understanding yourself?
Consider:
- What areas of your life could benefit from more intentional awareness?
- How do you balance self-understanding with compassion for others?
- What practices help you stay connected to your authentic self?
Remember, there's no "right" way to pursue self-awareness. Each path is as unique as the person walking it. The key is to remain curious, open, and gentle with yourself as you learn and grow.
Share your thoughts and experiences.

Let's learn from each other as we navigate this beautiful journey of self-discovery together.
Thank you! What an incredible compliment. I feel personal stories is the only way I know to share. Those in my personal life do not seem to always appreciate it and so I write it out on here :)
